July – October
You recognize this sweet melon by its slightly oval shape and rough texture, called netting. Cantaloupes have a tender orange flesh and very sweet flavor.
To find a ripe Cantaloupe look for straw-colored rind under the netting. There should also be no stem left in the stem end, this is called a full slip.
Since melons grow on the ground, it’s only logical to make sure they’re perfectly clean on the outside before cutting them. Run cool water over the melon before eating to remove any surface dirt that may remain.
Turlock Fruit melons are picked vine-ripened so they should immediately be stored in a refrigerator. Cover cut melons with plastic and store no more than 3 days.
